Towards UNESCO: The Magic of the Domus de Janas
The TGR tells the story of the ambitious UNESCO candidacy project for the Domus de Janas. Stop in Cheremule with excursions, scientific reflections, and valorization of the Sardinian pre-Nuragic heritage.
On March 1, 2023, TGR dedicated an extensive report to the journey towards UNESCO recognition of the Domus de Janas, with a key stop in Cheremule, in the evocative Park of Petroglyphs. During the day, the project aimed at enhancing these ancient rock-cut tombs, some dating back to the 5th millennium BC, a unique heritage of pre-Nuragic Sardinia, was officially presented.
The event brought together volcanic excursions, guided tours, and discussions with scholars and researchers. With the support of CESIM and the Network of Municipalities of the Domus de Janas — which includes 62 administrations involved and 35 candidate monuments, with Alghero leading — we are now entering a crucial phase: one year to complete the dossier. If accepted, the candidacy would represent the first UNESCO recognition for Italian prehistoric monuments.
