Domus de Janas: A Sardinian Treasure towards UNESCO
From the necropolis of Montessu to Geo on Rai 3: an exciting journey among the Domus de Janas of Sulcis, through breathtaking landscapes, prehistoric art, and collective memory. Sardinia aims for UNESCO recognition.
On May 16, 2023, the broadcast Geo on Rai 3 dedicated a special feature to the pre-Nuragic civilization of Sardinia and the UNESCO candidacy of the Domus de Janas. Connected from the Montessu necropolis, in Villaperuccio, the archaeologist Maria Giovanna De Martini led viewers to discover a unique and enchanting place: 35 hypogea carved into the rock, immersed in an extraordinary natural landscape.
Montessu is one of the 35 monuments included in the candidacy project, symbol of a millennial relationship between man and the earth. The Domus de Janas, true “fairy houses”, are monumental tombs dating back to over 6,000 years ago, rich in symbols, carved columns, and funeral goods. A heritage that is not only archaeological, but also cultural, identity-related, and scenic, and which UNESCO might soon recognize as a heritage of humanity. The service also highlighted the importance of protecting and enhancing these places for future generations.
